Four dipped pillar candles in ivory paraffin wax, each 4 cm across and 8 cm tall, for a steady flame on the dinner table or your altar. Light one at a time, trim the wick to about 1 cm first, and let the wax melt evenly across the top. In folk custom, white and ivory candles stand for new beginnings and a quiet, clear table; like most colour meanings, that is a modern convention from 20th-century candle-magic books. Burn time is given as 9 hours. Never leave a burning candle unattended. You will also need: a heat-proof plate or holder and matches or a lighter.
