Hold the tip in the flame for half a minute, blow it out and let the thin smoke rise before you begin; then lay the stick in a fireproof bowl until the ember is out. The scent is warm and woody with a sweet touch, much milder than white sage. Palo santo, 'holy wood', comes from the dry forests of Ecuador and Peru and has a long tradition of ceremonial use in South America. Never leave a glowing stick unattended.
