Candle care: the first burn and everything after
Why the first burn decides everything, how to trim a wick and how to put a candle out without smoke.
- I
First burn: let the wax melt to the edge of the glass, usually 2 to 3 hours. This prevents tunnelling.
- II
Before every lighting, trim the wick to about 5 mm. Woodwicks to about 3 mm, and remove the black edge.
- III
Put the flame out with a lid or by dipping the wick into the melted wax, then straighten it. Never blow into a woodwick.
Safety
Never leave a flame or smouldering herbs unattended. Use a heat-proof dish, ventilate, and keep smoke away from sleeping people, children and pets. All safety notes
