Your Zodiac Sign and Its Traditional Stones, Colours and Scents

The old table of zodiac stones from 1913, the colours and scents often linked to each sign, and how to turn them into a birthday ritual.

Every zodiac sign comes with a small world of associations: a stone, a colour, a scent, an element. If you search for them, you will find a dozen different lists that rarely agree. This article does two things. It gives you the oldest list we could trace to a named source, and it shows you how to turn your sign into a small birthday ritual, without promises about what stones or stars will do.

Where the zodiac stones come from

The idea of linking gemstones to months and signs is very old. It is often traced back to the twelve stones on the breastplate of the high priest described in the Book of Exodus, and later to the twelve foundation stones of the New Jerusalem. Over centuries these twelve stones were mapped onto months and onto the signs of the zodiac, in many different ways.

In 1913 the American mineralogist George Frederick Kunz collected these traditions in his book The Curious Lore of Precious Stones. His table of zodiac stones is the one we follow, because it is a historical source you can look up. Modern lists often differ, especially for Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius.

The twelve signs at a glance

  • Aries (21 March to 19 April): element Fire, ruled by Mars, stone bloodstone.
  • Taurus (20 April to 20 May): element Earth, ruled by Venus, stone sapphire.
  • Gemini (21 May to 20 June): element Air, ruled by Mercury, stone agate.
  • Cancer (21 June to 22 July): element Water, ruled by the Moon, stone emerald.
  • Leo (23 July to 22 August): element Fire, ruled by the Sun, stone onyx.
  • Virgo (23 August to 22 September): element Earth, ruled by Mercury, stone carnelian.
  • Libra (23 September to 22 October): element Air, ruled by Venus, stone chrysolite.
  • Scorpio (23 October to 21 November): element Water, traditionally ruled by Mars, stone beryl.
  • Sagittarius (22 November to 21 December): element Fire, ruled by Jupiter, stone topaz.
  • Capricorn (22 December to 19 January): element Earth, ruled by Saturn, stone ruby.
  • Aquarius (20 January to 18 February): element Air, traditionally ruled by Saturn, stone garnet.
  • Pisces (19 February to 20 March): element Water, traditionally ruled by Jupiter, stone amethyst.

The dates shift by a day in some years and sources. Each sign has its own page in our zodiac library, with its colour, scent and a small ritual.

Birthstones by month: the list of 1912

There is a second list, and it is the one most jewellers use. In 1912 the American National Association of Jewelers met in Kansas City and agreed on one stone for each month, not each sign. Kunz printed it a year later beside the older traditions. Since your birth month and your sign overlap only in part, your birthstone and your zodiac stone are often different.

The list has been changed a few times since, most recently with tanzanite and spinel. Neither list is more true than the other. One follows the calendar, the other the sky.

Colours and scents: associations, not rules

Colours and scents are where the lists disagree most. Aries is often linked with red and warm spice, Taurus with green, rose and vanilla, Cancer with silver and white, Leo with gold and frankincense, Scorpio with deep red, myrrh and patchouli, Pisces with sea green and sandalwood. These are associations that have grown in modern astrology books and shops, not ancient rules. Use them as inspiration and keep what feels like you.

A birthday ritual for your sign

Your season is the four weeks or so when the sun is in your sign. It is a natural moment to look back on the past year and forward to the next one.

  1. Light your candle on the first evening of your season or on your birthday.
  2. Hold your stone (or any stone you like) and write one page: what did the last year teach me, and what do I want the next one to feel like?
  3. Light one stick of incense and let it burn while you read your page once. Keep the stone where you will see it every day.

Our Sign Candle is made for exactly this: as it burns down, raw crystals come to light in the wax, and a gemstone bracelet for your sign comes with it.

A gift that is unmistakably theirs

Zodiac gifts work because they are personal without being risky. If you know someone's birthday, you know their sign. Add a short message such as "For the start of your year" and choose a delivery date close to the day.

A note on honesty

We share the traditions around stones and signs because they are beautiful and old. We do not claim that a stone or a sign has any effect on health, character or fate. Stones are minerals with a history; the zodiac is a way of telling time and stories. What you make of them is yours.

The four elements

The twelve signs are grouped into four elements, three signs each. It is the simplest way to understand the old system.

  • Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Traditionally described as warm, quick and outgoing. For a fire sign ritual, a candle is the obvious centre: a tall flame, perhaps a resin with a warm scent.
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Described as grounded, patient and practical. Stones, wood and slow evenings suit them: a riverstone, a woodwick candle, a heavy journal.
  • Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Described as curious, social and full of ideas. Smoke and paper belong here: incense, a notebook for thoughts that move fast.
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Described as deep, intuitive and emotional. Moon rituals and soft light suit them: selenite, a candle by the window on a full moon night.

These descriptions are traditional character sketches, not facts about people. They are a useful starting point for choosing a ritual that feels right.

How to find your season

Your season begins when the sun enters your sign, around the 20th of a month, and lasts until the next sign begins. If your birthday is close to the border between two signs, the exact year and time of birth decide. For a ritual it hardly matters: choose the sign that feels like yours.

Frequently asked questions

Which stone belongs to my zodiac sign?

Following G. F. Kunz (1913): Aries bloodstone, Taurus sapphire, Gemini agate, Cancer emerald, Leo onyx, Virgo carnelian, Libra chrysolite, Scorpio beryl, Sagittarius topaz, Capricorn ruby, Aquarius garnet, Pisces amethyst. Modern lists differ.

Why do zodiac stone lists disagree?

Different traditions mapped the twelve historical stones onto months and signs in different ways, and modern shops have added their own lists.

Is a birthstone the same as a zodiac stone?

Not always. Birthstones follow calendar months; zodiac stones follow the signs, which start around the 20th of each month.

What is a good zodiac gift?

Something personal and usable: a candle for their sign, incense chosen for it and a short card for the start of their year.

Which list is the right one?

Neither is more correct. Choose the stone whose story you like, or keep both.
