A Ten-Minute Evening Ritual to Close Your Day
An evening ritual is a small, fixed way to mark the end of the day: phone away, one candle, one scent, one page, ten minutes. It does not need to be spiritual to work as a ritual. It only needs to be the same each night.
An evening ritual is a small, fixed way to mark the end of the day: phone away, one candle, one scent, one page, ten minutes. It does not need to be spiritual to work as a ritual. It only needs to be the same each night. Here is a simple one to start with tonight.
An old idea
Monasteries have closed the day with a prayer for fifteen hundred years. The Rule of Saint Benedict, written in the 6th century, sets the last one before night: Compline, from the Latin completorium, the completion. After it, the house fell silent until morning. The German word Feierabend carries the same idea into ordinary life: the evening when work is laid down. A candle at the end of the day is the smallest version of both.
What you need
- One candle
- Something to smell: a stick of incense, a woodwick candle, a sprig of something from outside
- A notebook and a pen
- A small stone that fits in your hand
- Ten minutes, at the same time each evening
Before you begin
Choose your place: the kitchen table, the windowsill, the corner with your altar. Put everything there in the morning, so that in the evening you only have to sit down.
The ritual, step by step
- Put the phone in another room. This is the step that matters most.
- Switch off the big light and light the candle. The day is over now.
- Light the incense, or just breathe in the scent of the candle. Notice it for a moment.
- Hold the stone and go back through the day once, from morning to now. Do not judge it, just look.
- Write three lines: one thing that happened, one thing you are grateful for, one thing you leave for tomorrow.
- Put the stone beside the candle or in a small pot. Tomorrow you can take it with you.
- Put the candle out with a snuffer. That is your Feierabend.
Three questions for tonight's page
- What did today ask of me?
- Where was there a moment of quiet?
- What can wait until tomorrow?
Making it last
A ritual becomes a ritual through repetition, not through effort. Keep the same order and the same place. If you miss an evening, start again the next. After a few weeks the first step, lighting the candle, is enough to tell you the day is done.
Safety
- Never leave a burning candle or incense alone, and never fall asleep with a flame burning.
- Burn incense on a heat-proof dish, with a window open, away from babies and pets.
- Woodwick candles: trim the wooden wick to about 3 mm before lighting.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good evening ritual?
A short one you will actually keep. A candle, a scent, a page and ten minutes are enough.
How long should an evening ritual be?
Ten minutes is a good start. It matters more that it happens every evening than how long it lasts.
What do I write in an evening journal?
Three short lines: what happened, what you are grateful for, what can wait for tomorrow.
Do I need crystals or incense?
No. They give the ritual a smell and a weight in your hand, which makes it easier to remember. A candle alone is a ritual too.
