Candle Colours and Their Traditional Meanings
Every colour of candle carries a meaning that people have given it over time: white for beginnings, red for love and courage, green for growth, violet for the inner life.
Every colour of candle carries a meaning that people have given it over time: white for beginnings, red for love and courage, green for growth, violet for the inner life. These meanings are tradition, not rules, and many of them are younger than they sound. Choose the colour that feels right for your evening, and know where it comes from.
Where the colour language comes from
The oldest colour calendar most of us have seen is in church. Around the year 1200, Pope Innocent III wrote down which colours belong to which feasts: white for joy, red for fire and martyrs, black for mourning and penance, green for the days in between. Violet came in as a softer black for the weeks of waiting, Advent and Lent. In 1570 they were fixed for the whole Western church, and you can still see them at Advent and Easter.
The colour lists you find for candle magic today are much younger. They grew in the 20th century, in American Hoodoo candle shops and in modern Wicca, and they borrowed from the church, from folk custom and from the rainbow colours of the chakras, which were added in the West in the 20th century too. That is why two books can give you two different meanings for the same colour. Neither is wrong. It's a living language.
The colours at a glance
| Colour | Traditionally linked with | Often lit for |
|---|---|---|
| White | beginnings, a clean page, the moon | a new moon, a first evening in a new home, when you can't decide |
| Red | fire, love, courage | an anniversary, a brave step, winter festivals |
| Pink | affection, friendship, tenderness | a friend, a letter to someone you love |
| Orange | warmth, joy, the harvest | autumn evenings, a celebration |
| Yellow | sun, clear thinking, study | a morning ritual, a decision |
| Green | growth and spring, the garden | a new project, the spring equinox |
| Blue | calm water, honest words | a conversation you are getting ready for |
| Dark blue | night, rest, deep water | an ending, the last evening of something |
| Violet | the inner life, dreams, waiting | a quiet evening alone, Advent |
| Black | the night, endings, mourning | Samhain, remembering someone |
| Gold | the sun, festivals | midwinter, a round birthday |
| Silver | the moon | a full moon |
White is the one colour every tradition agrees on. If you only have white candles, you have everything you need.
Colour and the moon
Many people match the candle to the moon:
- New moon: white or silver, for something that is just beginning. Write one intention on a fresh page.
- Waxing moon: green or yellow, while the light grows.
- Full moon: silver or white, the moon's own colours.
- Waning moon: dark blue or black, for what you are ready to let go.
This is a modern custom, and a beautiful one. Our moon calendar shows you the next new and full moon.
How to choose
- Start with the evening, not the list. What is tonight about? A beginning, someone you love, something you want to close?
- Pick the colour that fits. If two fit, take the one you like to look at.
- Write it down. Note the date, the moon and the colour in your notebook. After a year you'll have your own colour language, and it will mean more than any table.
Safety
- Never leave a burning candle alone.
- Coloured candles drip more than white ones. Use a holder or a heat-proof plate.
- Keep away from curtains, shelves and anything above the flame, and out of reach of children and pets.
Questions
What do candle colours mean?
Each colour has traditional associations: white for beginnings, red for love and courage, green for growth, violet for the inner life, black for endings. They come from church custom, folk magic and modern Wicca, and they vary between traditions.
What colour candle for a new moon?
Most people choose white or silver.
What does a black candle mean?
It is traditionally linked with the night, endings and mourning, which is why it is lit at Samhain and for remembering. It is not a "dark" colour in a bad sense.
Do I need a special colour for a ritual?
No. Intention matters more than the colour. A white candle works for everything.
Where do chakra colours come from?
The rainbow order of the seven chakras is a Western addition of the 20th century. The old Indian texts give the chakras other colours.
