Your First Altar: A Simple Guide for Beginners

An altar is simply a place you come back to. A cloth, a candle, something from outside and something to write with are enough to begin. Many people lay it out by the four elements, an order much older than modern witchcraft.

An altar is simply a place you come back to. A cloth, a candle, something from outside and something to write with are enough to begin. Many people lay it out by the four elements, an order much older than modern witchcraft. Clear a corner tonight. That is your altar.

What an altar is

In almost every tradition there is a table for what matters: the house altar of the Romans for their household gods, the shelf with candles and photographs in a grandmother's kitchen, the Day of the Dead ofrenda in Mexico. A witch's altar is the same idea. It is not a stage for objects. It is the place where you sit down, light a candle and set your intention.

What you need

  • A cloth to mark the space
  • One candle
  • Something from outside: a stone, a leaf, a feather, a shell
  • A small dish of water or a bowl
  • A notebook and a pen
  • A heat-proof dish for incense, if you burn it

Where to put it

A windowsill, the top of a chest of drawers, one shelf of a bookcase. It should be somewhere you pass every day, and where a candle can burn safely: away from curtains, shelves above and anything that can fall. If you share your home, a small box you open in the evening works just as well.

The four elements as an order

The idea that everything is made of earth, water, air and fire goes back to the Greek thinker Empedocles, around 450 BC. Ceremonial magicians in the 19th century gave each element a direction, and modern witchcraft took this over. Many lay out their altar the same way:

  • North, earth: a stone, salt or a plant
  • East, air: incense or a feather
  • South, fire: the candle
  • West, water: a small bowl of water or a shell

You do not have to follow the compass. What matters is that each thing has its place, and that you know why it is there.

The pentagram, honestly

The five-pointed star is far older than Wicca. The Pythagoreans used it as a sign of recognition, medieval Christians read it as the five wounds of Christ, and in the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight it shines on Gawain's shield as the endless knot. In modern witchcraft its points stand for the four elements and the spirit. Many set it at the centre of the altar, on the cloth or on a plate, as a symbol of what they are working with.

Setting up your altar, step by step

  1. Clear the space and wipe it down.
  2. Lay the cloth. From now on this is not just a shelf.
  3. Place the candle in the middle or in the south.
  4. Add the elements one by one: stone, incense, water.
  5. Add one thing that is yours: a photograph, a card, a letter.
  6. Light the candle and sit for a minute. Say or write what this place is for.

Keeping it alive

An altar that is never touched becomes a shelf again. Change one thing with the seasons: a leaf in autumn, evergreen at Yule, the first flowers in spring. Light the candle on new and full moon, or every evening for ten minutes. Dust it, open the window, start again.

Safety

  • Never leave a burning candle alone.
  • Keep the candle away from curtains, dry plants and anything above it.
  • Burn incense only on a heat-proof dish or in a cast iron pot, with a window open.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special tools to start an altar?

No. A candle, a cloth and something from outside are enough. Tools come later, when you know what you use.

Which way should an altar face?

Many face it north or east. If your room does not allow it, choose the place that feels right and that you see every day.

Can I have an altar if I am not a witch?

Yes. People of many faiths and none keep a place for candles, photographs and things they love.

What do I put on my first altar?

One candle, one cloth, one thing from nature, one thing that is yours.
